Edgar Miller Wallpaper Swatch Shop

In the late 1940s, Edgar Miller was contracted by Chicago-based wallpaper manufacturer Basset & Vollum to design a series of wallpapers for national distribution. It is likely that the owners of Bassett & Vollum first saw Miller’s work in the form of painted murals and other art installations at The Normandy House (800 N. Tower Court, Chicago), a popular French-style and themed restaurant which sat directly facing the Chicago Water Tower and Michigan Avenue, where Miller was resident artist from the 1930s-1950s. Miller designed and executed all the art in the restaurant, including windows, furniture, menus, placemats, and more, and he regularly re-painted the walls with his fantastic, imaginative designs of French bucolic life.

Miller’s set of ten wallpapers, entitled Tower Court Collection, were released in 1949-50, and appeared in numerous advertising spreads and showroom features. A second collection of a few more designs was released later in the 1950s after the first collections positive commercial reception. Now, Edgar Miller Legacy, in partnership with Basset & Vollum (Davenport, IA), is once again bringing to you Miller’s classic wallpapers with select designs from both Tower Court Collections, printed in brand new colorways and sold as individual one-yard-long swatches.
