Modern staircase in the style of Andrew Rebori

Edgar Miller
1946

No records of the home's original blueprints exist, and it's unclear what the original staircase to the lower level and the general layout may have looked like. Edgar Miller took the opportunity to introduce a much more elegant and comfortable staircase when remodeling and creating a new connecting stairwell to the garden level for Frank Furedy in the 1940s. This renovation opened up the layout of the space and provided a grand entrance. Here, Miller borrowed streamline moderne concepts he had seen produced by his architect friend and collaborator, Andrew Rebori, introducing a dramatically curved railing and adding zig-zag patterns to the otherwise smooth curves, reflecting and reinforcing the triangular and arrow patterns of the adjacent radiator cover, as well as the many similar patterns one sees throughout the home.
