Horse Head Sculpture

Edgar Miller
c. 1972
Sculpted, glazed ceramic | Etruscan
From the Mark Mamolen Collection

This sculpted horse head comes from later in Miller’s career, during the early 1970s when he lived in Clearwater, Florida and was involved with the art scene there. The piece derives its inspiration from Etruscan art and objectifies the head of a horse; which denotes many powerful meanings across cultures, but also connects to Miller’s long-standing interest in equestrian imagery. The sculpture is hollow with enough space inside to accommodate a candle in order to light up the figure’s eyes.
