Tile design
Edgar Miller
1946
Not one to leave a surface untreated, Miller's direction and possible own hand in laying the tile for the floor of this room is remarkably complicated in spite of its apparent simplicity. Miller forgoes a symmetrical, even layout and instead installed an asymmetrical mosaic of tiles with no repetitive pattern. The fact that he was able to achieve this while still maintaining aesthetic harmony is truly impressive. Miller's ability to make abstraction and irregularity appear seamless and in perfect proportion was one of the artist's greatest skills. Reminiscent of Spanish colonial tiled floors, the colors chosen also bring to mind the American southwest and the Caribbean Isles.
