Copper charger

Edgar Miller
1946
Wrought copper
Diameter 66 cm

A tour-de-force in metalwork, this installed copper charger sits comfortably on the wall over the tiled fireplace. Working from the rear-side of the plate, Miller used a small hammer and chisel to intricately form the copper into a scene of bountiful flora and fauna. Antelope frolic amongst what appear to be pineapples and other plants, and a bird perches at the top left corner. In spite of the difficulty of working with the medium, Miller was able to fashion a considerable amount of his inspiring detail in his unique graphic expressionist style.
