Art glass windows
Edgar Miller
c. 1928
First time visitors to the Glasner Studio may not always pick up on the fact that the various stained glass windows throughout each of the Glasner Studio's rooms exemplify a different stylistic scheme. The pastel-toned art glass used for the windows in the Montgomery Bedroom come from a different stock than the richly colored stained glass Miller used in many of the other rooms of the house. Miller also chose for this bedroom a subdued, abstract geometric design that retains Miller's diverse experimental style while also presenting as uncharacteristically symmetrical and orderly.
Miller was known to utilize the simple geometries of triangles, diamonds, and chevrons to full effect throughout the Handmade Homes in Old Town, and these exact types of windows can also be seen in several other units at both the Kogen-Miller and Carl Street Studios. Miller knew that for a bedroom, less was more. He still made sure to impress residents and guests with enough variety of color and close-up details to keep things interesting.
The sill of these windows run along the eastern side of the bedroom, and were the perfect height for Lucy Montgomery's bed, which she situated against the same wall. Those who stayed in the room would awake to a dazzling display of colors in the morning light.
